Crowns Q&A

What are crowns?

Crowns are artificial caps that fit over your natural teeth. Dr. Kraft uses only porcelain in his crowns — no metal. Crowns restore teeth and improve their appearance. The expert dental team at Payson Dental and Orthodontics offers Cerec same-day crowns to help you avoid two separate dental visits.

Why might I need a crown?

Dr. Kraft and his team might recommend a crown if you have teeth that are:

  • Decaying
  • Misshapen
  • Discolored
  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Gapped
  • Too small
  • Infected

Dental crowns fit over dental implants or function as part of a bridge, to replace teeth that are missing or require extraction due to severe decay.

What happens during crown placement?

To determine if a crown is right for you, Dr. Kraft and his team review your medical and dental history, examine your teeth, and use dental X-rays. If a crown is the best option for you, Dr. Kraft prepares your tooth for crown placement. He may file the tooth down or build it up to ensure your new crown fits properly.

The Payson Dental and Orthodontics team uses the most advanced Cerec scanning technology to design same-day crowns. They also offer same-day Cerec veneers, inlays, and onlays. Once your dental restoration is ready, Dr. Kraft ensures it fits properly. He cements it to your natural tooth, where it remains long-term and blends in perfectly with the surrounding teeth.

If you require dental implants to replace missing teeth, Dr. Kraft first surgically places implants within your jawbone and allows the implants to heal. During a second appointment, he can digitally scan your teeth and create same-day crowns that attach to artificial metal tooth roots.

How should I care for crowns?

After receiving your crown, call the Payson Dental and Orthodontics team if it breaks or becomes loose. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss every day. Avoid chewing on hard objects like hard candy, popcorn kernels, and ice. Attend routine professional dental cleanings and exams every six months.

Don’t let a damaged tooth progress to a serious dental problem. Schedule an appointment with Payson Dental and Orthodontics over the phone or online to find out if a same-day crown is right for you.
