Spoiler Alert: Lollipops are Bad for Teeth

Choosing the right menu for your family has become trickier than ever. Fast, delicious food choices saturate our options, but their taste and convenience often come at the expense of our health. We’ve amassed a list of some foods you can watch out for when developing menus helpful to your dental health. Read on below to find out additional:

Lollipops or hard candy. Because lollipops are practically purely sugar (and a bunch of it), they help make bacterial acids in your mouth that can break down teeth. As if that weren’t bad enough, they’re tough enough to break or chip your chompers. Watch out for lollipops and other sugary, hard candies if you want to keep your dental health strong.

Potato chips. Carbohydrates (sugars) feed bacteria in your mouth, and starchy carbohydrates, in particular, are prone to sticking to teeth. And though they might be enjoyable, potato chips are a starchy carbohydrate food that can damage your chompers. To top it off, potato chips are often coated with sugary spice blends for flavoring.

Soda. When you drink soda, you’re giving the bacteria in your oral cavity a great feeding source — awesome for them, but damaging for your pearly whites. Bacteria change the sugars in food into acid, so sodas can become damaging to your dental health if you don’t drink them alongside water and wash out your oral cavity with fluoridated toothpaste frequently.
